David Empson was born in Columbus, IN. David attended Hilltop Christian Service Camp, which was very influential in his life: the place where he accepted Christ and also was called into the Christian ministry. He attended Kentucky Christian College where he met Sherree Hunt from Pikeville, KY and they married in 1981. They served in three churches for twenty years in youth ministry in Herrin, IL, Versailles, KY and in Hazelwood, IN. While serving at Hazelwood Christian Church, David got involved in taking his students on short term mission trips. In 1996, Doug Lucas, friend and president of the NMC 1996, invited him to bring his students to Lexington, KY for that year’s convention. While attending the NMC '97 in Tulsa, David heard the prediction from Ralph Winter's & felt his next assignment in ministry was to create a youth presence at the NMC in order to address the Winter's prediction. Starting in 1998, David was supported by many other youth ministers who saw the youth program combined with the fitting portions of the National Missionary Convention and many youth groups attended. This continued very well in the following years with teen conventions in Kansas, Tennessee & Indiana. In 2005, David was named by Walter Birney as the next Executive Director and that transition occurred in 2008.
David and his family continue to serve both at ICOM and in their local church of Clayton Christian Church. David and Sherree have two daughters, Emily and Jenny, both of whom serve the Kingdom and are involved with ICOM. Emily and her husband live in Winston Salem, NC along with their four children and Jenny lives in Clayton, IN with her dog Carter. David loves to golf, read leadership development books, travel, and spread awareness about missions and pour into the next generation of leaders.
